Citizen's Police Academy

Citizen's Police Academy

Residents who want to gain a better understanding about the Seguin Police Department will soon have the opportunity. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2019 SPD Citizen's Police Academy.

The academy will teach citizens how police officers, telecommunication staff and support personnel protect citizens and prevent crime. Students will interact with the Chief of Police, patrol officers, narcotics investigators, detectives, telecommunication staff and K-9 units. Police personnel will provide instruction in ethics, communications, narcotics, officer safety, patrol, traffic stops, DWI, use of force, handcuffing, building searches and SWAT activities.
A tour of the Juvenile Probation Center and the Guadalupe County Jail will take place during the academy. The final class will include a trip to the SPD training facility (gun range), providing students with an opportunity to learn gun safety as well as the basics of firing weapons. Citizens will also have an opportunity to ride-along with a patrol officer for a minimum of two times during the academy session. Upon completion of all classes, students will participate in a graduation ceremony and will be awarded certificates. This academy is completely free and citizens will be provided a 2019 academy shirt.
The annual ten-week academy starts Thursday, August 1st at 6pm in the training room on the first floor of the Seguin Police Department. Each class will run approximately three hours. The last class night will be August 1st and the graduation will be scheduled for October 3rd.
