While writing a traffic warning during a routine stop on Saturday, September 25, 1965 on Court Street in Seguin, Texas, SPD Detective Joe Carrillo was shot in the line of duty with a 9 mm handgun. Although wounded, Detective Carrillo pursued the suspect and advised dispatch of his situation. While pursuing the suspect, Detective Carrillo returned fire just outside of the city limits and fatally struck the suspect.
On Sunday, July 20, 1975, Detective Carrillo Detective Carrillo succumbed to the gunshot wound he sustained 10 years prior while making that traffic stop.
Left to cherish Detective Carrillo's memory were his wife and two children.
