Mayor vs. Mayor: Matador/Unicorn rivalry continues

SEGUIN, Texas – Bets have been placed in an age-old football rivalry between Seguin and New Braunfels. Since 1923, the two cities have been in one of the longest-running high school football rivalries in Texas, and the passion on both sides hasn’t faded a bit. In fact, the mayors of both cities continue to meet prior to the big game to bet that their school will come out on top.

“We’re ready to win. It’s our turn to bring home the plaque,” said Mayor Don Keil.

New Braunfels Mayor Barron Casteel and Seguin Mayor Keil met in the New Braunfels City Council Chambers on Wednesday morning to secure the annual bet. Every year, the city who loses the prior year has to make the trek to the winner’s city. The winner’s plaque will also hang at the City Hall of the team that prevails on September 8th.

The Matadors and the Unicorns will take the field in Seguin on Friday, September 8th at 7:30 pm. ###
