1877

Fire Company began

City Council allocated $100 to assist in buying a hook and ladder truck and fire equipment

Charter issued in Austin for “Reliance Fire Company, Number One of Seguin” on August 26, 1882

Called “Reliance Hook and Ladder Company”; Motto -  “Always Ready, Depend on Us”

1887

Need for City water works became of vital importance in the 1880s due to rapid population growth

New System completed and water shot over the Court House lawn by the “fire boys’ on May 23, 1887 

New 16” water main laid by the City from the Waterworks to the standpipe in the 1940s

1900

Schultz Fire

1908

A new home was built for the Fire Department in 1908 when City Council allocated $7000 for a new City Hall and Fire Station.  The building was and still is located at the Northwest Corner of Austin and Mountain Streets. 

1922

Blumberg Block Fire

1935

Seguin Auxiliary one of oldest and largest in state; organized in Feb. of 1935 and began w/65 members; object is to promote the interest and welfare of the members of the Seguin Fire Dept.

1947

Seguin Racing Team won first place at the State meet in Amarillo with a time of 21 seconds – they took home a $300 prize

1949

Memorial Fire and Police Headquarters was built and opened in 1949 at cost of $85,000 at the corner of Elm and River Streets.  It’s architectural style was intended to be “Italian Renaissance executed in modern materials and appurtenances.” This, according to Ms. Weinert who composed a history of the department for the new Headquarter’s opening in 1949, was very appropriate since the first firefighters were organized in Rome and the extension ladder invented by ancient Roman firefighters is still a model for the ladder used today.  

2004

Fire Station No. 2 is located on South Highway 46 and was completed and opened in 2004.  It was recently named in honor of Charles “Poochie” Gregg, a longtime firefighter and former Chief of the Volunteer Department. 

2007

Fire Station No. 3 is located on E. Kingsbury St. next to 123 Bypass and was completed and opened in 2007.

2008

Seguin Fire Department takes delivery of 100 foot Sutphen Ladder (Truck 3).
