Seguin, Texas Hosts Manufacturing Day Bus Tour
Seguin, Texas - On October 6, 2017, thousands of manufacturers and cities from around the world celebrated the 6th Annual National Manufacturing Day by hosting students, teachers, parents, job seekers and community leaders at open houses, plant tours and educational sessions to highlight advanced manufacturing technology and the exciting careers the industry has to offer. It is a chance for students to see the diverse career options that are innovative, impactful and rewarding.
In recognition of Manufacturing Day 2017, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, Seguin Chamber of Commerce and Workforce Solutions Alamo teamed up with representatives from Navarro and Seguin ISD's to host a bus tour for 8th-grade students. This marked the first time that the Seguin community has participated in Manufacturing Day celebrations.
“Students must think about career pathways early and often. That is why we chose to target our 8th graders who are the future of our workforce. Educators and employers working together can collectively build pathways that fill an workforce need for employers and prepare students for success in rewarding careers” said Josh Schneuker, Director of Economic Development for the City of Seguin.
8th grade students from three middle schools within Seguin ISD and Navarro ISD toured 9 Seguin manufacturing facilities where they observed their day-to-day operations and learned about the career pathways available to them within their own backyard. The Seguin manufacturers that participated in the bus tour included Rave Gears, Alamo Group, Caterpillar, Continental, Minigrip, Cargill, CMC Steel, Niagara Bottling and Geronimo Alloys. The participating employers gave the students a great snapshot of what manufacturing is like today. The students were able to see first hand everything from the advanced technology and reverse engineering involved in manufacturing gears and gear shafts at Rave Gears, to the high-speed and cutting-edge technology used in the manufacturing of bottling water at Niagara, and everything in between.
"It was such a rewarding event to be a part of. The day's activities would not have been possible without the cooporation and partnership from everyone that was involved in planning Manufacturing Day 2017 in Seguin. We are so thankful to the representatives from Navarro and Seguin ISD for organizing the all of the participating students; to GVEC for sponsoring the event and providing each participating student with a special manufacturing day t-shirt; and to our participating manufacturers for opening their doors and taking the time out of their day to educate the students on the diverse manufacturing industry in Seguin." said Schneuker.
